The Lion King (U)

This week's family film is The Lion King, which is one of the most popular Disney animated musicals ever!  The film first hit cinema screens back in 1994, but here at Gloucester Guildhall we thought 2012 would be a perfect year to bring it back.

The film is one which has an emotionally stirring storyline.  Simba begins life as an honoured prince, the son of the powerful King Mufasa. The cub's happy childhood turns tragic when his evil uncle, Scar, murders Mufasa and drives Simba away from the kingdom, making him believe that he is responsible for his father’s death.

This story is presented to the audiences
as a richly drawn animation and the story is actually the creation of 29 different writers, two of which have also brought to life The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Jack Frost and James and the Giant Peach.  The film is loved by children and adults alike.

The Lion King was released in June 1994 to a positive reaction from critics and audience members.  Everyone praised the film for its music and story. As of 2011, the film is the highest-grossing hand-drawn film in film history.  So don't miss your chance to be drawn into this film at Gloucester Guildhall.

Some of Hollywood's well-known actors voice these lovable characters (as well as some of the unlovable ones!): Matthew Broderick features as the adult Simba, Jeremy Irons as Scar, Rowan Atkinson makes an appearance as Zaza and James Earl Jones as Mufasa.

*A surprisingly dark, deep and more complex movie than I thought it would be. There's a reason why everyone loves it. One of the best animated films of all time.* Eclipse Magazine

*A classic story told through immersive visuals, great voice work and some of the most memorable songs in movie history. The Lion King defines animated classic.
